I'm Having A Wet Cough, What Do I Do
Okay, so Saturday I began to get a cold. I've been taking medicine and feeling better, my cough now has been subsiding, getting better daily. But I noticed today now my cough is becoming more productive. Most of the time it's still dry, but here and there I'll have a wet one. I can't feel anything
"I can't feel anything in my chest when I cough, it's mostly in my throat I'm assuming?" More likely your bronchus. A formula with an expectorant will do fine. And you can take a cough formula with both an expectorant and suppressant. It's not going to completely suppress the cough but it will calm it a bit. You may wish to sleep at some point.
"I have Mucinex. Now, what does it do, exactly?" Mucinex is in a class of medication called mucolytic. It beaks up congested mucus,
What's the process behind it?" The mechanism? Mucus, sputum is held together by protein bonds and these bonds make mucus thick, sticky and hard to expectorate. Mucolytics break the chemical bonds in the mucoprotein in mucus and make it all thinner, less sticky and easier to expectorate. Adding more water to ones diet can have a similar effect.
"It just loosens the phelgm right?" It breaks the protein bonds and makes sputum more kinetic.
"Does the medicine make you cough more so you can THROW IT UP?" No. In the same way a stool softener doesn't make you go, it just makes it *easier* to go, a mucolytic won't *make* you cough, but it will make it *easier* to cough. And because it's easier to cough out loose sputum, you may find yourself coughing more.
"Because I don't want to take medicine that's going to make me cough up phlegm." This is what you're coughing up now. Call it sputum if that helps.
"Will the cough subside without medicine, or will it get worse?" It will resolve faster and with less likelihood of complications if you clear this sputum out. It has trapped bacteria and viruses in it.
"Is there any other medicine I can take? I'm scared to cough up phlegm." If you wish to leave sputum where it is, don't take anything. I imagine you'll manage to bring up some anyway and you'll probably swallow it. I can't imagine why you'd be scared Really? Scared? to get this nasty stuff out. If you're really tired of this nasty cough, then get get the nasty sputum out of your airway. It really doesn't matter if you swallow it, Jeremy, it can't hurt you. Your gastric juice will take care of it.
In the end, Jeremy, I can lead a Jeremy to water but I can't make Jeremy drink.
I'm a nurse.
One thing that you should do is what the doctor told you to do or you can do is see a nose throat and ear doctor to see about the wet cough and the stuffy nose just to ease your mind about this why the doctor told you that all he needs is to rest and drink lots of liquids is to help him with with the wet cough and the stuffy nose rest means not always sleeping what he means by that is for him to lay down and rest you could lay down with him in the bed and rest for one hour three times a day and that that would give him the rest that he needs and then when it is time for him to go to bed for the night he will get the rest that he needs for the night and then when he gets up the next day do the same thing until he gets better now for the liquids give him lots of water, Gatorade, juice and also some hot tea but no sugar green tea would be best while it is hot to drink stay away from milk until the wet cough go's away then milk will be fine to give him I hope that this helps you
