Is sugar alcohol safe after weight lose surgery?
To the extent that sugar alcohols are safe for anyone - LOL Sugar alcohols can have unpleasant side effects for anyone, and different SAs have different effects.
The best, IMO, are erythritol & xylitol - less laxative effect. But xylitol can raise blood sugars more than I like. Erythritol has a peculiar cooling effect in the mouth.
If you're wanting to know for baking . . . I use a combination (1/2 & 1/2) of Splenda granular & polydextrose. It works well most of the time. No noticeable laxative effect, sweet enough, and bulky enough.
Polydextrose is available at honeyvillegrain.com.
5 Year post-op, lots of SAs have passed these lips :o)
Sugar alcohol is sorbitol. It's a no-calorie sweetener but it is also known as "baby laxitive." It's what doctors give to constipated babies. It works by irritating the bowels, so you shoudl stay away from it until your surgey has totally healed and your system jas settled down.
We Have All Heard Of The Dangers Of Aspartame But What About

We have all heard of the dangers of Aspartame but what about,Erythritol and Stevia?I've tried searching for side effects or health controversies but can't find much. The side effects of Aspartame were not available right away either but nowyikesAny way, has anyone had or noticed any reactions to
Here is what I found on Stevia (Skinny page 30):
"Stevia, another winner, is derived from a plant found in Paraguay. The Japanese have been using this wonder sweetener for decades, South Americans for centuries. In fact, it is used by hundreds of millions of people around the world to balance blood-sugar levels, reduce cravings for sweets, and aid in digestion."
"Additionally, it is known for its antimicrobial properties (it inhibits the growth of bacteria.)"
It goes on to say that it is unrecognized in the US. This is slightly out dated seeing as Truvia (stevia) which is is now found in grocery stores.
I have had severe migraines after using splenda and aspartame, but so far none with the Truvia.

There seems to have been some scare campaign against the use of sweetleaf (Stevia) - but it's thought that the campaign originated with the (cane-)sugar industry, who see it as a distinct threat to their huge profits. Until there are sufficient tests done on the human health effects of Stevia, it's too early to say one way or the other. I've eaten some cakes that a colleague made with Stevia, and I'm still alive.
I can't say I've heard of erythritol.
Personally, the sweeteners I use are raw cane-sugar, molasses, malt extract, treacle, golden syrup, maple syrup, apple juice, palm sugar, honey and, extremely rarely, white cane-sugar.
